Who and What is the Scottish Ghillie
Doug Jefferson is the Scottish Ghillie. I have always been interested in the outdoors and working with the land. Now that I have retired from the British Royal Air Force and emmigrating to America, I am living and working on the land. We are fortunate to live on approx 3 acres of land in Northwest Louisiana. This space gives me the chance to be a Ghillie. By definition a ghillie is someone who raises/protects animals for hunting, taking people fishing/hunting, and basically caring for the land. This lifestyle gives you access to an almost limitless supply of raw materials for crafting.
I have fished since I was 10. I have tried to fish where ever I am in the World. My military service sent me to Canada, Cyprus, Italy, The Gulf area and the South Atlantic and, of course, within the UK. I have been lucky enough to catch fish using all different techniques. I dont think the same as a lot of anglers, I try to think like a fish, which seems to work.
In addition to actually fishing, I also make my own lures and flies. This really adds to the overall enjoyment of catching a wild animal (fish) on something you created. As I am living on some land and raising rabbits for meat, I can use their by-products for crafting. Nothing is wasted, even their poop is re-cycled into the garden as it is one of the best fertilizers available.
As mentioned above, another aspect of being a Ghillie is protecting the "farm animals" from predators. To date I have trapped 3 possums (who kill chickens and suck their blood) and 1 fox that had taken several Guinneas. Where possible I do try and recycle these too. I am thankful to my military experience with firearms to make sure that when I have to "take care of business" I can do so swiftly and without undue suffering.
